IS KARMA OUR DESTINY?
‘Karma’ is a Sanskrit word which in India mainly means action or deed that has been performed by an individual in his or her entire span of life. Our karma influences our way of living and activities that we perform. In Hinduism, many people coincides karma with God’s will. The people who follow Vedanta consider God to be a supreme power, which has a great role in deciding the actions or deeds that individuals perform. It is not merely based on the law of cause and effect but is dependent on God’s will which means that it is not always true that your actions will decide your fate because it is God, who has planned your destiny. It is believed that God our almighty is fair in his decisions so whatever He does has a reason. Neither he gives pain and suffering to people unreasonably nor does He make people happy without any cause. Karma is based on the deeds of a person, it is not punishment. God neither punishes nor reprimands His followers rather He tries to teach them lessons of life by showing them the impacts of their actions. We experience the consequences of our actions or deeds and it is not based on any logic. It is also not based on the fact that as you sow so you reap. Though it is believed that if a person does good deeds, he or she will be gifted for their goodness, and if people do bad deeds, they will have to pay for it, this logic does not always hold true. There is no particular outcome of a particular action as every action is based on certain circumstances. It is not fate; rather it is our free will, which finds expression through our actions and deeds. It is we who perform different activities and thereby decides our own destiny which happens as designed by God. We can conquer our karma by our intelligence and should never desire for the fruitfulness of their action. Every person has to execute his or her duty on earth. God has decided for the actions or duties that everybody would act upon in their life. Only by completing his or her actions a person can break free from the cycle of life and death and attain moksha. People believe in transmigration of soul which is trapped in the cycle of birth and death and ultimately gets liberated. But is that all about Karma? According to Jainism, Karma is related to karmic dirt, which is microscopic and subtle particles that are attracted towards our soul because our body is destructive but our soul is not. It is the consciousness of soul that instructs the karma that we perform. Our life is influenced by the action that we perform consciously as directed by our soul. It is, therefore, our soul, which is affected by our action. It is believed that we reap the fruits of our actions. Our life is not affected by the destiny which has been already designed by God rather there is no impact of eternity on our life. We make our own life and also choose our course of action. It is not always necessary that we do bad to others sometimes even thinking about doing wrongs to others can cause harm to us because our soul gets influenced by the evil. Jainism believes that all souls are equal there is no inequality but the soul that achieves nirvana is that which strives for it. According to them, a person can become free from the bondage of karma if he or she is able to overcome the attraction from the material aspects of life and can also become free from the love of their near and dear ones. Emotions and passions are two main reasons for being bonded to the world. We are emotionally attached to others and, therefore, we do not want our soul to be liberated similarly, passions such as anger, jealousy, hatred, love, etc. keeps our soul bonded. For these reasons, we need to triumph over our weaknesses so that we can attain nirvana. Everybody can attain nirvana by their sheer dint of effort. So it is possible for us to modify our karma. There is no one to judge our actions but we bear the consequences of the actions that we do.
